How MilesHound calculates its numbers

Plain-English methodology. Everything below reflects what the app actually does; anything not yet documented is marked [to be confirmed].

Redeem value (¢ per mile)

Each programme's headline redeem value is a baseline blend of Singapore-first sources — MileLion's mile valuation (SG benchmark: 1.5¢ max buy price, 1.7¢ minimum acceptable redemption), the SGfi KrisFlyer Miles Value Index (48 destinations × 4 cabins against live SIA cash fares: economy avg 2.06¢/mi, PEY 2.72, business 3.82 on an S$ basis) and SingSaver's ~1.5¢ baseline — cross-checked against US trackers (The Points Guy, NerdWallet, updated 13 Oct 2026). Singapore-relevant programmes (KrisFlyer, Asia Miles) are weighted toward the SG sources.

The “avg X–Y¢” range

Every row's detail view shows a credible low–high band in US cents per mile compiled from the sources above. The headline number sits inside that band. Treat the band, not the headline, as the honest answer — individual redemptions routinely fall outside it.

Earn value (miles per S$)

The earn view flips the ratio: how many miles a typical earn path (flight earn rates, bank-transfer bonuses, card spend) yields per dollar spent, shown per programme. When you lens by cabin, fixed multipliers of the typical rate are applied (economy ×0.9, premium economy ×1.3, business ×2.5). These multipliers are heuristics for ranking, not per-route quotes.

Sample routes (trip search)

The destination search prices specific sample awards from Singapore across zone buckets — regional (KUL/BKK/CGK), North Asia (HKG/TPE/HND/NRT), Oceania (SYD/MEL/PER/AKL), Europe and USA — at Saver/Classic chart levels. Value per mile = (cash fare − taxes & fees) ÷ miles required. Award charts and cash price anchors are dated per entry (Sep 2026 pass; each route row names its source — singaporeair.com, cathaypacific.com, aircanada.com, qantas.com, philippineairlines.com). US-cent bands convert at USD/SGD 1.2797. Exact cash-fare collection dates per route: [to be confirmed].

Taxes and fees

Estimated cash co-pays (carrier-imposed surcharges and airport taxes) are subtracted from the cash fare before any value-per-mile division, so fuel-surcharged programmes aren't flattered. The tax figures are typical Saver-level estimates, not live quotes.

Elite Gold requirements

Thresholds come from each programme's official tier pages and use that programme's own currency (Status Points, Status Credits, Tier Miles…), so they are not directly comparable — check the currency label, not just the number. Cathay Pacific's bar was re-verified against cathaypacific.com in Oct 2026 (600 Status Points + one Cathay-marketed sector). Philippine Airlines is a oneworld member-designate (announced 6 Jun 2026) with full membership expected in 2027; it is tagged Unaligned until it joins.

Data freshness

Valuations are editable by the maintainer (admin-updated values are served from the app database, with the shipped constants as seed and fallback). Each tab shows a global “data updated” date, and programme rows carry their own last-verified date. Updates ship as redeployments — there is no update button to press; reloading the page always gives you the latest deployed data. Source re-check cadence: [to be confirmed].

What this is not

MilesHound does not query live award availability, and no figure here is a booking price. It is a baseline for comparison — always confirm current pricing on the airline's own site before transferring points or issuing tickets.
